For this challenge, I made a single handle miniature blown glass vessel that’s reminiscent of a glass pitcher— hence the name “Pitcher This.” I used Rubino Oro in a neutral flame.

I was trying to achieve a strong magenta pink, sometimes difficult with 104 soft glass. These were my most successful.

The February Challenge was made for me! I find the pinks and purples to be the most challenging colors to master. I was happy with the two beads in my submission, however when I tried to duplicate them?  Nope. No way. As I sit here composing my entry, directly in front of me is my very large Christmas Cactus with ONE blossom. JUST ONE brilliant pink fuchsia magenta-ish blossom, taunting me. I think I’ll go melt some glass.

It's that time of year when I start daydreaming about warm, sunny beaches.  I love making fantasy shells and with the beautiful colors from Double Helix, and lovely dichro from Lori Riley, it is zing with the bling!

I'm excited to share this recipe with you, for my VIVA Magenta challenge bead.

First layer is a clear round bead.

Next layer, encase bead in striking red, cool slightly and strike in flame to bloom color.

Next layer, clear encase bead.

Next layer, cover the entire bead with Double Helix Cleo, shape bead and reduce.

Next layer, clear encase bead (preserving reduction).

Last layer, Black glass, use spiderweb technique, 1.5 passes over the whole bead.

There are no mistakes in art, only opportunities to change your perspective. This pendant style was a result of a happy accident.  I was blowing out the body of a vessel and one side was too thin and blew out.  I had a huge hole in the side of my vessel and as I looked it over I thought “That could be a ruffled calla lily if I nudge it a little here and there.” So I made a flower and a design series was born.

Hello, I am Laura Bowker, a glass artist from the Pacific Northwest. As a maker, my work is inspired by everything I see, feel and experience. It is a personal expression of self through creativity and a growth process through the interweaving of color, form, texture and line. The technique used in my work is glass engraving, a centuries old Italian style of grinding and sculpting called Battuto. The result is definitive lines, angles and the matte finish.

Each piece is held in my hands against stone or diamond wheels to create textures – textures that vary in patterned faceting from deep grooves to very subtle lines. The end result is a tactile surface that invites touch. It is my way of drawing people in to reach out, feel the matte texture and experience my work.

This entry is a hollow glass bead made from Double Helix, Rhea. The coldwork on my bead has five sections that used four different diamond wheels.

Pink/Magenta has been an elusive color for me in this bead technique that I've been wrestling with for almost a year. The Viva Magenta challenge gave me the push I needed to keep pursuing colors in a range I had nearly given up on. Clicking on the Pantone link you provided, I saw that magenta is considered to be powerful and empowering. After finally figuring out how to get close to magenta, a color I love, I can only agree.

I enjoy making hot pink, i.e., magenta beads using layers of CIM Clockwork, clear, Clio reduced, and finally clear. One of the beads started with a layer of white.

In my entry for the Pantone color challenge, I was experimenting with double helix glass and made this cute heart.

I live in the UK in the sometimes cold North East of England. So on cold overcast days, you need something to brighten it up, so here's my heart bead to bring a bit of cheer!

I've used my favourite pink colour, Double Helix Rhea, to make this heart. Down one side, I've made a long dahlia flower with a murrini core and finished the bead by decorating it with small pink flowers on both sides.

This bead was made using an ivory base, silvered ivory stringer, and double helix Kronos. DH Rhea was used as the magenta coloring in the bead and the bell flower that was included as a display element.

This bead has a white core wrapped with a periwinkle stringer in a slim cone shape. I then used DH Rhea wrapped thin to thick for a nice gradation. Capped with metallic black.

First I want to thank the ISGB for these fun challenges.

This bead was made on a Bethlehem Alpha, using CiM Crocus, and Double Helix Eros Light. Finally wrapped in gold leaf, and encased in Lauscha Clear.

Once again Thank You!
